The main character, Liesel Meminger, is often referred to as the “Book Thief” by the narrator, Death, as he tells the story of Liesel and times he has come across her. The reason Liesel is known as the “Book Thief” is because she, obviously, steals books. She loves to read and and write and the books are a huge connection she has between her and other characters in the story. Liesel steals her first book, the first time she and Death cross paths, at the site of her brothers burial. It becomes the last thing she has to remind her of her brother. It is also the book her foster father uses to teach her to read and write. Other books she had stolen came from the mayor’s wife’s library. Liesel often would come to read there and when that arrangement stopped she started to steal her books. The mayor’s wife knew of this but did not do anything, that was just part of their relationship. Books are also a main connection Liesel has with Max, the Jew her family is hiding. Max and Liesel talk a lot about books and Max even writes Liesel stories. After he leaves Liesel starts writing her own story, a story about her life, in a book the mayor’s wife gives her, which she titles The Book Thief.
