In The Book Thief, there are many conflicts, it is a time of war. One is between the characters and the society. It takes place during World War II, a time of Nazis and Adolf Hitler as ruler. Everyone in Molching is scared of the Nazis and Hitler, scared to do anything that would even upset a Nazi. If anyone does something to upset a Nazi, like Hans Hubermann and Alex Steiner, they are punished by being forced to become a Nazi and work the bad jobs. Or if someone is Jewish, or anything else that Hitler does not want in his perfect place he is trying to create, they are taken and dehumanized beyond comprehension. So everyone just follows a robot like response and salute while they all praise Hitler in public. Another conflict is between main character, Liesel, and herself. Liesel has had a rough life up to this point and she is only a kid. Each day is like her own daily battle, while there is an actual war going on right outside. Liesel also has to keep a huge secret. Even though she eventually tells Rudy, the day before he dies, that they are hiding a Jewish man in their basement. If anyone found out the Hubermanns were hiding Max they could be taken by the Nazis just like Max would be. It is scary for Liesel to even imagine this, and to know it is true. She has to keep this secret and go along like any normal day, everyday. There are also conflicts between characters. Nobody is ever best friends with everybody. There is some small character conflicts like with Rosa Hubermann and an other women on their street. They often spit on each others doors in disgust of one another. This is just a small, long time, battle between the two. However, there is a big conflict even within the Hubermann family. It is obvious that Rosa is not the nicest person around and most people do not like her, but the conflict in the family is mainly between father and son. The Hubermann’s son is a devoted Nazi. Very different from his family, especially the side that he does not know about. The side that is hiding a Jewish man in the basement. It is sad how the Hubermann’s relationship with their own son turns out. He ends up storming out after a fight while there are some said choice words, and they never see him again. It is not always a happily ever after with peoples relationships.
