All throughout the book Liesel becomes a stronger person. The book starts off with her losing her family. Her brother dies and her mother has to leave her because she says she can no longer take care of Liesel and her brother. At first Liesel had a hard time dealing with her emotions and dealing with others. She does not believe anyone else really knows and feels what she is going through. She tended to get into lots of fights and into a lot of trouble. As the book goes on when Liesel meets Max she learns that everyone knows what loss and pain feel like. Max, with his own back story, teaches her that she isn’t the only one. Max helps her become a better person. They soon bond over the things they have in common; the love of books, recurring nightmares, and their feelings of loss and guilt. In the beginning Liesel did not know how to read or write but her love for books was soon to come after stealing her first book. This became part of her relationship with her foster dad, Hans. He was the one that taught her to read, write, and some other life lessons. Liesel is a very smart young girl and with the knowledge of everyone else in the world having their own pain she becomes a much more understanding person. Also besides Rudy, and later Max, Hans was her best friend. Then the book ends with her losing everyone else, her second family and her friends. Hans and Rudy both die in the bombing and Max is sent away to the camps, even though he eventually returns. For a child she has had a hard life and has become a much stronger person than most people because of it. She even matures enough to write a story about her life. She has grown from being a shy and emotionally weak character to becoming a brave and outgoing character.
